About Matthew Rutten

Matthew Rutten studied textiles and art at Caulfield Technical School where he completed his VCE in Melbourne in 1987. It was there that he learned the art of silk painting. Rutten furthered his artistic education at the Melbourne College of Textiles where he studied Studio Textiles which involved design, weaving, tapestry and silk painting. His design work is influenced by indigenous art. In 1988 he went to Alice Springs and met various indigenous artists at one of the galleries. Matthew had his first solo exhibition in 1990 in Prahran.

EXHIBITIONS

Matthew has painted a lot of textile and paper during the pandemic, and is currently developing an art studio at home, while painting works on paper and cloth.
